Food in the Metaverse: Can Virtual Food Trigger Real Brain Responses?

As virtual reality (VR) technologies advance, the metaverse is reshaping various aspects of our lives, including how we experience food. While we can’t yet taste or smell in virtual environments, immersive VR experiences are beginning to influence our brain’s responses to virtual food stimuli. This intersection of technology and neuroscience raises intriguing questions: Can virtual food elicit real cravings? How does our brain process these digital cues?

A study published in Frontiers in Virtual Reality examined how the visual quality of food images in VR affects the desire to eat.
